Overview

Phở Cyclo Café is a Vietnamese gem nestled in South Philadelphia at 2124 S Broad St, offering an authentic culinary escape for fans of true Vietnamese flavors. Though the restaurant’s exterior and interior might not boast modern flair, its charm lies in simplicity and sincerity—a family-run spot where warm hospitality complements every dish.

The standout here is undoubtedly the rice noodle soups, which form the heart of the menu. From the richly layered pork broth base to the spicy kick of the Hue-style vermicelli, each bowl carries a distinct, comforting broth that rewards patience and palate. The Roast Duck with Egg Noodle Soup paints a deliciously savory picture, pairing tender duck with silky noodles in a delicate, well-crafted broth. Specialty dishes like Sauteed Chicken with Lemongrass and the unique Special Grilled Duck add vibrant dimensions to this classic lineup, highlighting traditional Vietnamese cooking with nuanced home-style touches.

Seafood choices like Shrimp Sauteed with Mixed Vegetables and Salt and Pepper Squid bring fresh, bold flavors that contrast nicely with the more subtle soup offerings. Among diners, the beloved Bun Dau Mam Tom — a platter featuring fermented shrimp sauce paired with crispy tofu and herbs — divides opinion but ultimately stands as a hallmark of genuine Vietnamese taste, reflecting the nuanced, adventurous side of the cuisine that only insiders often appreciate.

Location-wise, Phở Cyclo Café is perfectly positioned near the Snyder subway stop, making it a convenient pit stop for locals and visitors eager to bypass typical tourist fare. The space is cozy and intimate, fostering a casual atmosphere best suited for food lovers who prioritize authenticity over polish. While the place can feel cramped, the intimate setting enhances the communal dining experience, where conversations flow as easily as the bowls of broth.

Targeted at both Vietnamese cuisine aficionados and curious newcomers willing to explore beyond the familiar, the café offers a menu diversity that encourages experimentation. The family’s thoughtful recommendations and genuine care for guests enrich the visit, making it more than a meal—it’s a cultural exchange at every bite.

There are moments to improve, such as the occasional wait for tables and some unevenness in certain dishes like the Bún Chả noodles, but these minor flaws don’t overshadow the overall culinary integrity. The instrumental background music provides a subtle ambiance, though it may need slight dialing down for full comfort during busy hours.

For those who appreciate bold, homestyle Vietnamese cooking served with kindness and authenticity in a no-frills setting, Phở Cyclo Café is a worthy visit. It’s a reminder that genuine flavors and heartfelt service rarely go out of style, especially in the vibrant tapestry of Philadelphia’s food scene.

A hidden gem of South Philly. The restaurant is old and doesn't look much appealing, but their foods do deliver very well, the family running the place is very kind and helpful, they even recommended us what to do with the foods and drinks. Their bun dau mam tom is solid. 4 stars because the lemongrass orange drink tastes quite off. Instrumental music is good, but maybe a bit loud. The location is good tho, right out of the subway orange line. Would 100% recommend for the foods and price!

My favorite Vietnamese restaurant currently because there are so many good options here. Bún bò is a must try. It smells really good and the broth is very well-seasoned. The taste is very different from the bbh at other places. Another must try is bún mắm. Although they only have cabbage and lettuce and not the typical veggie that comes with bún mắm, it is still very good. You get roasted pork, fish, shrimp, and squid. Mì vịt tiềm is also delicious. Hủ tiếu khô is okay, it is very saucy and on the sweeter side. The meat in bún chả is tender and well seasoned, but the noodle is not that good, a bit overcooked. Also the bowl is really small so it is hard to eat. Although it is called phở cyclo, but phở here is meh. Bột chiên is decent, a bit too crispy imo. The wait time can sometimes be long and it's a pretty small place.

It was a very authentic Vietnamese moms and pops restaurant around Snyder. Couple friends and I ordered the bun dao mam tom platter to share. I think it was a bit adventurous for my friends personally, as 2 out of 3 didn’t like the fermented shrimp sauce so much to eat with the rest of the food. I did enjoy it however, I agreed it may take a bit to get used to. The papaya salad is average, can be a bit spicier. The squab was very good! I would definitely return to try other dishes in the restaurant!

Best Bun Dau Mam Tom in Philly . It would be even better if there were some pig's intestines as well. Will come back again .

Super convenient to the Snyder stop, tasty, quick, and reasonably priced. We liked the tofu bahn mi. Portion was good for a light meal, but if you’re really hungry, consider getting something additional (or two bahn mi haha!)

The service was wonderful and very attentive and the food was wonderful. I had shrimp pho. It felt very homey like you were having dinner at your family’s house.

A little gem of a restaurant, small & cozy, good service and excellent food. For appetizer I ordered the Goi Cuon pork & shrimp summer rolls with peanut sauce. My main meal was the Pho Tu Chon (thin slices of tender beef & meatballs) noodle soup garnished with raw bean sprouts, fresh basil, scallions and jalapeno peppers. Both dishes were superb. I will certainly come back for another meal and try something different.

True mom and pop kind if Vietnamese joint, and it might be my favorite in the city. The family that runs it is very kind and welcoming. The soup broth is so flavorful, you can tell it’s made with love! They don’t skimp on the noodles and the meats. The bahn mi and the spring rolls are very tasty as well. Highly recommended!
